cut along (something)

Literally, to cut or trim something using a line or border as a guide. Some of my kindergarteners still have trouble cutting along the dotted line. You don't have to cut along the perforation—the perforation is there so you can just tear off the permission slip. OK, kids, cut along the lines of the different shapes. In the end, you should each have a circle, a square, and a triangle.
