To express mutual sympathy with one about a shared negative experience. Luckily, I can commiserate with my classmates about how mean our science teacher is. If you ever want to commiserate about bad break-ups, I've had my share, believe me. I'm going down to the bar to commiserate with the other laid-off workers.
