come down on the side of (someone or something)

To establish one's opinion or view as being in support of a particular side of an issue. I think the jury is going to come down on the side of the plaintiff. This issue is unjust, and as your mayor, I promise to come down on the side of equality. The candidate needs all the votes he can get, so he knows better than to come down definitively on the side of liberals or conservatives on this issue.
