close fight

A contest or competition in which the winner achieves victory by only a very narrow margin. It was a real close fight, but Boston managed to hang on to their lead for a 21–17 win. Political analysts are predicting a close fight between the two candidates in this year's election. These two teams are so evenly matched that I bet their playoff series is going to be a close fight.
