catch of the day

1. A fish that has been caught on the same day it's being sold or served. When I was a girl, I would go with my grandmother to the fishmonger to buy his catch of the day. Cod's the catch of the day, huh? All right, that's what I'll have. It doesn't matter what the catch of the day is—Rick doesn't like seafood, so we're going to have to make something else for dinner.
2. Someone who is considered especially attractive or desirable among others as a romantic or sexual partner. He had a steady job, a nice body, and he had very nice manners. In our little town, he was positively the catch of the day. All the guys in school thought Sarah was the catch of the day from the moment she transferred here. Please, get in line behind all the other guys who want to date Alissa—she's basically the catch of the day around here.
