bring sand to the beach

To do or undertake something redundant, pointless, or futile, usually in the context of bringing something to a location where it is abundant or unnecessary. The company always caters lunch for these meetings, so I don't know why you bring in your own sandwich. You might as well bring sand to the beach! I thought a bottle of wine would be a nice gift, but when I saw their liquor cabinet I could tell that I had brought sand to the beach. Why on earth would you start a business exporting olive oil to Italy? That would be like bringing sand to the beach!
