break off with (someone)

To end a relationship, typically a romantic one. I'm so sad to hear that Mara broke off with John—I thought those two would be together forever. He's a bad boy, so she's not going to break off with him anytime soon, naturally. I don't know what happened—they were high school sweethearts, and then Ed just broke off with her!
