break (one's) habit

To stop doing a routine action or activity. I struggled to break my habit of biting my nails, but getting regular manicures helped. You need to break your habit of coming to work late before the boss notices. Don't worry, the start of the school year will break the kids' habit of sleeping in till noon every day.
