To visually delineate for inhabitants the boundaries of a parish by striking the ground or landmarks, as with branches or rods. An ancient custom. Primarily heard in UK. A: "They still beat the bounds around here?" B: "Yes, it's a tradition that takes place along the of the community every seven years." What route are we taking to beat the bounds? Just follow the clergyman—he'll lead us all in beating the bounds.
