be up before (something)

1. To be awake before a certain hour or point in time. This is the first time I've been up before noon all summer! I'd better get to bed. I have to be up before 6 AM tomorrow. It's not that I want to be up before 4 AM—I have a 6 AM flight to catch!
2. To be awake before something happens. I love being up before the sun rises. Make sure you're up before the airport shuttle leaves, or you'll be stranded on the island. Ugh, I'm always up before my alarm goes off, it seems. This insomnia is really a drag.
