be (something) to the good

To be in a favorable position or situation, the extent of which is stated between "be" and "to." I had so many bills to pay this month that I'm shocked I came out $28 to the good! I had to go home and change after spilling coffee on myself, but it was all to the good because I avoided a major traffic jam. No, it's a change to the good—Bill and I just weren't that compatible, so we really needed to move on from each other.
