be out of pocket

1. To not have much money. I get paid next week, so can we go out to dinner then? I'm just out of pocket right now. If I get laid off, I know it won't be long before I'm out of pocket. Jo's been out of pocket ever since she got that huge medical bill.
2. To be unavailable, typically because one is away from one's phone or desk. Janet is out of pocket right now, but I can give her a message. George is out of pocket? Darn, I really needed to talk to him about this. I'm sorry to say she's still out of pocket. She's just been stuck in this meeting all day.
