1. To be moving in the wrong direction or away from the intended course. Could you check the map? I think we're a bit off course. This doesn't look familiar at all. Oh, I really hope we aren't off course. Captain, do you know where we are? I think we're off course!
2. By extension, to stray from or go against the correct or established plan or course of action. With a raft of additional spending measures tacked on, the legislation seems like it is way off course from its original purpose. The project is so off course at this point that I don't know if it's worth continuing. Our plans of saving for a house have been off course ever since Joel lost his job.
