To put forth effort toward some goal or end. Annabelle is at pains to make sure her relatives are comfortable when they come to visit. So far, she's cleaned the whole house and set up all the guest rooms. Don't you see? Your parents are at pains to ensure that you have enough money for college. Your tutor is at pains to ensure that you learn this material. It would be nice if you could put some effort in too!
