be a wash

To have gains and losses that are considered to be equal or offset; to have an outcome of negligible advantage or disadvantage. The product sold moderately well, but we spent so much on development and marketing that it ended up being a wash. I'll pay the Internet bill if you'll pay the electricity bill, and we'll just say that it's a wash. Because we both won a significant number of matches against each other, we figured it was a wash in the end.
