be (out) in the open

1. To be exposed and visible to others in an open space or area. A: "Someone stole my bicycle!" B: "Well, it was out in the open all night without a lock. What did you think was going to happen?" The unique theater space is out in the open in the middle of a forest, so the actors often make use of the nature around them. We can't stop the convoy here—we're right out in the open. We could be attacked at any minute!
2. By extension, to have been revealed or uncovered for others to know, see, experience, etc. Now that details of the legislation are in the open, many people are questioning who actually had a hand in crafting it. We want any and all concerns or frustrations of our team to be out in the open. That's why we hold these meetings every week. Now that everything is out in the open, do you think Jenny will be able to forgive me?
