To elicit a favorable or enthusiastic response from someone. That dish was a big hit with our friends, so I'm sure the people at the church potluck will love it too. The company's inventive new smartphone model has really been a hit with the public. You really were a hit with my family—they can't stop gushing about you.

To make a very good impression with someone; to be very well liked by someone or some group. You really made a big hit with my friends—they can't stop gushing about you. Apparently my prime rib roast made a hit with Janet's boss. The announcement that they were entering the mobile phone market made a hit with investors.
