To bestow something upon someone or something. Our boss awarded Joel the promotion. The committee has awarded the city of Columbus the honor of hosting the All-Star Game. That guy's performances are always so wooden, though! How could the Academy award him the Oscar?

to give a prize or reward to someone (for something). The committee awarded a plaque to Andy for his loyalty. They awarded prizes for efficiency to two different people.
