As it transpired, often surprisingly or unexpectedly. I was worried when I saw all that traffic, but, as it turned out, I still got to work on time. I needed a room to rent this winter, and, as it turned out, a friend of mine was looking for someone to sublet—perfect timing! A: "How was your blind date last night?" B: "As it turned out, we actually had gone to the same high school! So we already kind of knew each other."
