childish An alliterative rhyme for being cross-legged while sitting. Primarily heard in US. OK, kids, everyone sit criss-cross applesauce and face the front of class! We all sat criss-cross applesauce waiting for gym class to start. I can't sit criss-cross applesauce—not when my arthritis is flaring up like this.

childish A jocular, possibly belittling assertion of one's role or position of authority. Popularized by the television show and personality "Judge Judy." A: "But I just think—" B: "Listen, I'm the boss, applesauce. If I say that the deal is not going ahead, then that's the end of the conversation, OK?" I'm the boss, applesauce. That mean you have to do what I say. I know you don't like this contract, but I'm the boss, applesauce—and I'm signing it.
