Someone or something whose past achievements or contributions are now largely forgotten or seen as insignificant. These days, the Quebec Nordiques are a footnote in hockey history, even though the organization went on to win multiple Stanley Cups as the Colorado Avalanche. Many failed presidential candidates end up just being footnotes in history. Because that actress was recast before the show exploded in popularity, she's become something of a footnote in history.
