Thinking or acting impetuously or preemptively, before the reality or truth of something is revealed. A: "I can't believe he told you to leave!" B: "Oh, he was out over his skis, as usual. I don't pay much attention to what he says." You have no way of knowing what Shelly's thinking, and you're over your skis if you think you do. A: "I love this house, I can't wait to live here!" après-ski

1. noun The social activities that people engage in after skiing or while visiting a town where skiing is popular. ("Aprés" means "after" in French.) I'm not fan of skiing, but I'm fine with après-ski—sitting around a fireplace in the lodge is my idea of a good time. Shall we go back to the lodge for après-ski? We had a great time on the slopes today, but we're definitely ready for après-ski now.
2. adjective Relating to the social activities that take place after skiing. Where is the best après-ski place in this town? Is this appropriate après-ski attire? What do people normally wear? Après-ski activities include lounging in the lodge, right? Then I'm in!

don't get (out) over your skis

Don't think or act impetuously or preemptively without knowing the reality of a situation. I always tell entrepreneurs, "Don't get over your skis." The last thing you want to do when you're starting a new business is to take on more risk and responsibility than you can actually handle. Come on now, don't get out over your skis—you have no way of knowing what Shelly's thinking. A: "I'm kind of freaking out about the whole thing." B: "Now, don't get out over your skis. Until the doctor calls, you're just guessing at scenarios anyway."
