the shot heard round the world

1. The first shots fired at the 1775 Battle of Lexington and Concord, which marked the beginning of the American Revolution. The phrase itself originated in Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem about the battle, "Concord Hymn." Without the shot heard round the world, there would be no United States of America.
2. A game-winning home run hit by New York Giant Bobby Thomson in the ninth inning of the final game to determine the winner of the 1951 National League pennant. This game did indeed have a wide audience, as it was the first nationally televised sporting event. Dylan loves listening to Grandpa's tales of things like the race for Babe Ruth's single-season home run record and the shot heard round the world.
