hic jacet

A Latin phrase meaning "here lies" that is often inscribed on gravestones. This headstone is a mystery—it says "Hic jacet" with no name underneath! I don't know enough Latin to translate the entire message on the grave. "Hic jacet" means "here lies"—after that, I'm lost. Hic jacet John Smith, loving father and husband.

hic Rhodus, hic salta

A Latin phrase taken from one of Aesop's fables, in which an athlete is urged to repeat the impressive jump that he claims to have made on the island of Rhodes. The Latin phrase translates to "here is Rhodes, jump here." A: "I'm friends with everyone in the school!" B: "Oh yeah? "Hic Rhodus, hic salta"—go to talk to that big group of people, I bet you don't know any of them!" A: "All right, star athlete, "hic Rhodus, hic salta"—do your slam dunk here." B: "I told you, I can't, I need my other shoes." Come on now, you can't tell a hockey story like that without showing us how it's done on the ice. "Hic Rhodus, hic salta," right?
