garden leave

A period in which an employee does not work but continues to get paid, as before leaving or being terminated by a company. Primarily heard in UK. Brett's on garden leave right now, but I'm sure they're going to fire him. You can place him on garden leave while we investigate the alleged incident. I only resigned because they put me on garden leave, and I knew it would look worse if I got fired!
