informal

1. Of a business, to fail or close; to cease to do business. A number of restaurants have opened in this space over the years, but they all eventually folded within their first year. A: "Is Sarah still working for that software company?" B: "No, they folded a few years ago. I think she's working for a pharmaceutical company now." That little shop is adorable, but I suspect it'll fold sooner than later—there's just not enough foot traffic here.

2. To close or cease to operate (a business). We had to fold the entire company after our last product completely flopped. A: "Wait, are they going to fold our division? B: "Yeah, if we don't get our sales numbers up." If the company files for bankruptcy, does that mean they're going to fold our branch?

3. To submit, yield, or give in. They started out strong for the first half of the game, but then they just seemed to fold after the other team scored their second touchdown. The senator said she would fight to get this legislation passed, but she folded as soon as she met the slightest bit of resistance from opponents. Mom, you can't fold every time the kids pressure you to buy them a toy.
