curtain call

1. A period of time at the end of a theater performance in which the performers return to the stage to receive and acknowledge applause. Wait for the stage manager's signal before going out for the curtain call. Everyone in the audience leapt to their feet during the curtain call. The cheers of the adoring crowd brought the Broadway star out several more times after her curtain call.
2. A moment after a successful play or at the end of a sporting event in which one or more athletes return to the field for recognition from fans. The team came out for a well earned curtain call after their dominant 10–1 victory. Her teammates encouraged her to go out for a curtain call after her impressive homerun. Because he was named star of the game, the fans demanded that he come back out for another curtain call.
3. The final instance of some activity or situation before someone or something concludes. After her third defeat in a row, many believe that the curtain call is coming for her athletic career. This is not a curtain call for us. Our company may have had a setback, but we're determined to come back stronger than ever. Mom, you're 82 now. Please tell me this year will be your curtain call working in the attendance office.
