audi alteram partem
From Latin, literally "hear the other side," used as a maxim in law to signify the importance that no accused party be convicted or condemned without first having a chance to refute or contest the accusation, evidence, and witnesses against them. A: "I think it's pretty plain to see that he is guilty." B: "Now, now—audi alteram partem! Without due process, our legal system would not survive." We prioritize the tenet "audi alteram partem" in this country, so you do get the opportunity to refute the claims made against you. I know my rights! Audi alteram partem—you can't convict me just like that!
