(one's) ears are ringing

One has a constant, high-pitched sound inside of one's ears, as owing to illness, an exposure to loud music, or a nearby percussive blast. The congestion in my head is so bad that my ears are ringing. Though thankfully no one was hurt by the explosion, our ears were ringing for days afterward. If your ears are always ringing after a concert, you should really think about wearing ear plugs. They work wonders for me!

Fig. [for someone's ears] to have a ringing sound because of an illness or other condition; very loud music, or some other very loud sound. After the explosion, my ears were ringing for hours. My ears are ringing because I have a sinus infection.
