(had) known it was coming

Had known in advance that something was a likely or possible occurrence. A: "I'm so sorry to hear that you got fired." B: "Ah, thanks, but I had known it was coming—that place just wasn't a good fit for me." Even though I'd known it was coming, the punchline to the joke still cracked me up. If only I had known what was coming, I could have prepared myself better.
