1. Of water, exceptionally still and tranquil. Without even the slightest of breezes, the entire lake was smooth as glass. Yesterday, the ocean was as smooth as glass, but it's the complete opposite today with this stormy weather. The water was as smooth as glass before we started skipping stones.
2. Of some solid surface, exceptionally smooth to the touch. He sanded the wood down until it was as smooth as glass. Yikes, did you polish the floor today? It's smooth as glass—I almost slipped! The lanes of a bowling alley are always smooth as glass—that's why you're not supposed to step over the line.

Cliché smooth and shiny. (often used to describe calm bodies of water. *Also: as ~.) The bay is as smooth as glass, so we should have a pleasant boat trip. This custard is smooth as silk.
